Whats The Good Word?

Prompt: Dictionary, Shmictionary

Time to confess: tell us about a time when you used a word whose meaning you didn’t actually know (or were very wrong about, in retrospect)

Confession time again, today!  I confessed just  yesterday I had never heard of Blood Moon till my son told me what it meant.

Well today’s prompt again takes me back to my kids… some of the words and expressions  they use so naturally, would often go right over my head unless I summoned the courage to ask them or surreptitiously look it up in the dictionary or The Miz Know-It-all Google Aunty ! For starters, for  a fairly long time, to me, LOL meant a word, not an acronym and was not very sure of the usage either. Same for ROFL, OMG, TGIF. Now I’m wiser. LOL !!

I’m not sure I am fond of expressions like MHRD etc, though. Continue reading

Ready, Set, Blood Moon !

Prompt: 10 minutes. You and your keyboard (or smartphone. Or tablet. Or pen and paper). No pauses, no edits, no looking back: it’s free-write time!

This was the first time I had heard of it – a Blood Moon – a rare lunar eclipse that would turn the moon red. A rare event, it is even rarer in that we were witness to a Tetrad – a series of  4 Blood Moons through a 2 year period. To put in perspective, such an event has occurred only twice before in the past 500 years!! Awesome, or what?

I gained this knowledge form my son at the lunch table and was intrigues.  Though the part of the world we are in at present  ( Chennai in India) was not exactly among the favored sites to watch this phenomenon from, we decided to give it a try and found that Moon Rise was at 5.54pm, at Chennai. We traipsed off to the beach – The  Marina Beach –  to have a look-see. This was just a few minutes before the moon was to exit the darkest part of the  Earth’s shadow at 6.05 pm.

A few of My Favorite…..Peeves!

perfect

My title could very well have read “Confessions of a Perfectionist” if anyone who knew me well would have to suggest one. So as I said it’s confession time. Where do I start?

At home? When I wanted every meal to be tasty and warm, every room to be spic and span, every smile bright and cheerful?

At work? Where I hated failure of any kind by me, at judgement, skill or expertise …When I wanted every worker to be as diligent, sincere, efficient and compassionate as they could be. And me as well,  of course. Continue reading

Interview

Interview

“My thoughts, but reflections of my mind

Create ripples and then more ripples I find…”

Excerpts from my own interview…..

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog.

Aruna : I am a doctor working in the Indian Army. Married to a supportive and wonderful  Army Officer, with 2 children aged 22 and 15.

I started blogging a few months ago. I have always loved writing and find the easiest medium of expressing my views thoughts and opinions, all of which, I have many!

I blog about life in general be it memoirs, travel, happiness my family, my relationships. Its a personal blog.

What makes your blog so unique and why should people read it?

Aruna : My blog is as unique as I am. It is me. I believe that every person is unique and will always have something to share. It may not be educative always, but an experience shared has the power to change another person’s day, life and thoughts.

It is also as free as I am. I find categorizing a blog into a particular type very restrictive. As it is a personal blog, it is as varied as life itself. It goes where my thoughts take me. I often use the WordPress daily prompt but even my thoughts even on the prompts would be unique.

People may find an echo in my blogs as I write on life itself. I write in my various capacities as a woman – a daughter, a wife, a mother, a friend, a sister, a doctor, a working woman. All familiar roles that every woman plays, so it is easy to identify with my blog. Continue reading

Premio Dardos!

The winner is

Well, thanks a ton, Saya ! Its an honor especially when the citation says its for recognition of cultural, ethical, literary, and personal values transmitted in the form of creative and original writing. There’s no appreciation like peers appreciation and I can unabashedly say that it made my day to know that this wonderful co-traveller thought of me when drawing up her list.

And she went on to make me even happier when she said “Quote, unquote” “because of her amazing writing showing a maturity which I strive to achieve in my writing”……

Muchas Gracias, Saya ! http://sayadpoet.wordpress.com/2014/09/25/premio-dardos-my-first-award/ And may I add that if you had not already been conferred the award already, you would have definitely been on my list as well !! Continue reading

LITMUS,LITMUS ON THE WALL

Prompt: If you had to come up with one question, the answer to which would determine whether or not you could be friends with a person you’ve just met, what would it be? What would the right answer be?

“Hi! “, she said shyly. “Hi! ” came the soft answer.  Silence for some time.

Both were at a party and it was obvious both  did not know too many people around.  Each had arrived with their respective husbands who had promptly deposited them in the ladies corner and disappeared in the general direction of the bar.

After a few more minutes of the companionable silence, Aruna asked the young girl: “What are your hobbies?” “Oh,”  said Deepa – they had by now exchanged first  names – ” I just love books,”  followed by a heartbeat later,” movies and music, too. “

Starring “Me” in My Story!

Today’s prompt : FLASH TALK

You’re about to enter a room full of strangers, where you will have exactly four minutes to tell a story that would convey who you really are. What’s your story?

Once upon a time, there was a young girl, who like all young girls in the stories she had read, dreamt of being swept away by a dashing knight on a white steed.

Alas, all the girls seemed to be pretty, wealthy, lissome and helpless – a damsel in distress, a princess. Our heroine was none of these and so she was not sure what the future held. Continue reading
