#100happydays Day 16

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Shaken and Stirred.”
This is an interesting prompt because I do like cooking and it is part of my day and life in many many ways.
My affair with cooking started after marriage. As I was just out of Medical College , I had no clue about cooking and had apprised my fiance about this fact. He and I had a pact that we would learn cooking together. It goes without saying that this momentous decision was never translated into reality. But I realized that he loved food and home-cooked food at that. To give him his due, he was extremely of my initial “disastrous” attempts.
There was no Uncle Google then and my first culinary teachers were the various cook books that came with my first pressure cooker, food processor etc. The results were sometimes pathetic and would have been funny if they had not brought tears to my eyes. I did not have even a gas stove and toiled over a Kerosene wick stove and a pump stove for my first productions in the kitchen.
It was under these trying circumstances that one fine day, I was told of an impending “party” at home for “just 10 -12 ” people. I was aghast but my husband was confident that I would do just fine. I did not share his enthusiasm or his confidence and had huge butterflies in my stomach. The big day dawned. I started at around 9 in the morning and worked till 5pm when I realized that I was far behind my schedule. The kitchen looked like a hurricane had visited it, my table was not laid and the house was in a mess. Hubby dear was busy in office and when the bell rang at around 6 pm, I opened it and promptly burst into tears. He was stunned. Anyways I controlled my tears and made the house and kitchen and myself look as presentable as I could.
The guests arrived. They were all bachelor officers with healthy appetites. Now, one of the dishes on the menu was “Dosa “. When it was time for dinner , I was told by my enthusiastic guests that all of them wanted only dosas!! The end result was that I made Dosas continuously for over 2 hours. By the time it was my turn, the batter was finished!! But I had some very happy guests and a very proud and happy husband as well.
So I would rate that as my best attempt at a meal, given my inexperience at both cooking and hosting guests.
Its time to say thank you again.
The past few weeks have been very kind by way of recognition from fellow bloggers.
I possibly owe Rashmi of http://soulnspiritblog.com/ an apology for acknowledging it a little late. Rashmi and I go a long way and I still remember her as a chirpy bride who came to our unit. A lot of water has flown under the bridge since then and I have seen her grow personally to the delightful “Soul” that she is now. Her blog has helped me get to know her that much better and it has shown a facet of her vivacious personality that is not always evident. May you grow some more Rashmi. And thanks a ton for nominating me. I have already accepted this award once before – It can be seen here https://ripplesnreflectiontimes.wordpress.com/2014/10/19/one-lovely-blog/ Continue reading
In Retrospect : Yesterday you invented a new astrological sign. Today, write your own horoscope — for the past month (in other words, as if you’d written it October 1st).
October is a busy month for Astraeans. ( https://ripplesnreflectiontimes.wordpress.com/2014/10/28/791/ ) You are likely to have guests and a heavy social scene with friends as well. Your family will demand attention and get it too. A few important decisions regarding your children will be made. For those of you in the medical profession, it turns out to be the busiest month of the year. The good news is that you will earn blessings and satisfaction on that front. Travel is on the cards and family bonding increases as a result. Your siblings will also be happy with your company. If unattached, romance is on the cards. If Married, you will spend a lot of quality time together and be nostalgic. The bad news is that you are likely to attend a lot of functions and socialize at home and so will add a lot of weight. It is therefore suggested that you exercise and diet towards the end of the month. For those of you creatively inclined , you will be appreciated by peers and will bring a lot of satisfaction.http://dailypost.wordpress.com/dp_prompt/in-retrospect/

This is a picture very dear to me. Its my daughter on horseback taking part in a tournament where she was the youngest participant and the only girl. A proud moment in her young life. And mine.
The play of light capturing her against the sky is something that captured all the hearts of the entire family. A favorite pic…….

My title could very well have read “Confessions of a Perfectionist” if anyone who knew me well would have to suggest one. So as I said it’s confession time. Where do I start?
At home? When I wanted every meal to be tasty and warm, every room to be spic and span, every smile bright and cheerful?
At work? Where I hated failure of any kind by me, at judgement, skill or expertise …When I wanted every worker to be as diligent, sincere, efficient and compassionate as they could be. And me as well, of course. Continue reading
Interview
“My thoughts, but reflections of my mind
Create ripples and then more ripples I find…”
Excerpts from my own interview…..
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog.
Aruna : I am a doctor working in the Indian Army. Married to a supportive and wonderful Army Officer, with 2 children aged 22 and 15.
I started blogging a few months ago. I have always loved writing and find the easiest medium of expressing my views thoughts and opinions, all of which, I have many!
I blog about life in general be it memoirs, travel, happiness my family, my relationships. Its a personal blog.
What makes your blog so unique and why should people read it?
Aruna : My blog is as unique as I am. It is me. I believe that every person is unique and will always have something to share. It may not be educative always, but an experience shared has the power to change another person’s day, life and thoughts.
It is also as free as I am. I find categorizing a blog into a particular type very restrictive. As it is a personal blog, it is as varied as life itself. It goes where my thoughts take me. I often use the WordPress daily prompt but even my thoughts even on the prompts would be unique.
People may find an echo in my blogs as I write on life itself. I write in my various capacities as a woman – a daughter, a wife, a mother, a friend, a sister, a doctor, a working woman. All familiar roles that every woman plays, so it is easy to identify with my blog. Continue reading
Prompt : THE GREAT DIVIDE
When reading for fun, do you usually choose fiction or non-fiction? Do you have an idea why you prefer one over the other?
I have loved reading from the time I started reading. I was called called various names like BookWorm from childhood. Reading was fun!! Period…
As for the great divide, if it is for “fun”, I guess I prefer fiction . Non fiction needs my mind to be more focused and receptive to ideas and perceptions, make my own impressions and draw my own conclusions. While reading fiction is akin to watching a movie, or better still, letting my imagination run riot, lost in the exotic locales with the main protagonists whether a romance or a thriller. I wait for the ending with a sense of expectation, sometimes even with bated breath, to see if I have second guessed the author. Continue reading
