Prompt: Dictionary, Shmictionary
Time to confess: tell us about a time when you used a word whose meaning you didn’t actually know (or were very wrong about, in retrospect)
Confession time again, today! I confessed just yesterday I had never heard of Blood Moon till my son told me what it meant.
Well today’s prompt again takes me back to my kids… some of the words and expressions they use so naturally, would often go right over my head unless I summoned the courage to ask them or surreptitiously look it up in the dictionary or The Miz Know-It-all Google Aunty ! For starters, for a fairly long time, to me, LOL meant a word, not an acronym and was not very sure of the usage either. Same for ROFL, OMG, TGIF. Now I’m wiser. LOL !!
I’m not sure I am fond of expressions like MHRD etc, though.
Poltergeist was another word I had not known the meaning of for along time. I am not a fan of anything supernatural, be it books, movies or TV serials. All I knew was that it was something supernatural and so was not interested. Despite being a movie buff and a bookworm as well, horror and paranormal genres have never been my cup of tea. I learned form Wikipedia that it was a noisy ghost and that a movie made on it in 1982 was jinxed and brought bad luck to a lot of people associated with it as well.
Blogging and WordPress has widened my dictionary as well. I remember being surprised by the knowledge that Livid meant Purple. It is a color challenge and I had to look up the meaning to understand it meant purple. The font color today is an ode to this post.

I was ignorant of the “smileys” used so often these days when they were used by friends. They were used by one of my friends very often while “texting” and I finally had to have a ready reckoner to interpret them especially when keyboard shortcuts were used. I like to think my android Phone has now made me a connoisseur! 🙂 😀
As I mentioned at the outset, Blood Moon was a Phrase I had never heard of before and I used in my post here.

I am sure there will a lot more to add the next time WordPress repeats the prompt!! Till then , Cheers!

Thanks for making me wiser.. I often ended up putting the wrong emoticons..which was worse than not putting any !
It took me quite a while to decipher LOL and TTL .(btw i still dont know what MHRD means..) The mnemonics we used in our anatomy classes appear to be child’s play when compared to these..

Your post reminded of a hilarious section on Ellen’s show where she would tell about how parents misused some of the slang words we teenager use, missing what they stand for completely. One went like this “My mom texted everyone ‘My mother-in-law died. LOL’
I texted my mom back ‘Mom what the hell, Why would you write LOL?’
She replied back “Why? Doesn’t it mean ‘Lots of Love’?”
That’s when I told her it actually means “Laughing out loud”
And my mom said ‘Shit, I texted it to the whole family thinking it means Lots of love” 😛
I found this hilarious. Though poor women!

Hey, I play online too sometimes, at ISC, handler: ‘skub’ or ‘bojleng’ (just in case that’s where you’re playing too). About ‘the last resort’ I visit quite often, I was referring to my habit of using words without giving much thought about their meanings. Check my poem here, you’ll know what I mean:

(How dare me calling that stupid rant poetry, now can you believe that!? 😀 )
Hope you enjoy it, though. Cheers!
